Stanford Intercollegiate Day One Results
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Texas Women's Golf freshman Madison Pressel fired a school single-round record of 6-under-par 65 on the first day of the Stanford Intercollegiate to stand atop the leaderboard in the third tournament of her collegiate career. As a team, the Longhorns also etched their names in the record book with a school-record 5-under 279 to finish the opening round in third place in the 15-team field.
Pressel's record-setting round included seven birdies and a lone bogey, and ended with back-to-back birdies on her final two holes of the par-71, 6,156-yard Stanford Golf Course. Her day began on the back nine where she carded birdies on the 12th and 17th holes. After making the turn at 2-under, Pressel lit up the front nine with birdies on holes one, four, five, eight and nine, with her lone blemish of the day occurring on the par-4 second hole.
Pressel broke the previous school record of 67 that was held by three Texas Exes - Jessica Reese, Kristin Dufour and Heather Bowie. Thirteen players in Texas history have recorded rounds of 68.
All four Texas scorers finished in the top 25 on day one, with freshman Haley Stephens tied for 11th at 1-under 70, and sophomore Nicole Vandermade and senior Shannon Fish tied for 24th place at 1-over 72. Freshman Katelyn Sepmoree carded a 9-over 80 and is tied for 73rd place.
Texas' previous 18-hole record was set just one year ago when it fired a raw score of 281 in the final round of the UNLV Showdown.
Arizona State leads the team competition at 11-under 273, while UCLA is in second place at 7-under 277. Texas holds a five-stroke advantage over fourth-place Arizona (284, E).
Texas will be paired with Arizona State and UCLA Saturday when it begins the second round at noon Central. Live scoring can be followed online at www.Golfstat.com.

POST-ROUND QUOTES
Head Coach Martha Richards
On the team's overall performance: Everyone was really composed today and we were just ready to go. We had a good practice round yesterday, everyone took really good notes, and we had strong leaders in Nicole and Shannon who have played here before. We just all feel really comfortable out here. The mindset today was that we just needed to go out there and get after it.
On the play of freshman Madison Pressel: I saw a lot of Madison's shots today and she was striking her irons really well. She had several short birdie putts, and then she also made quite a few mid-length ones. She's hitting the ball very consistently, and she understands her shot pattern. She comes into every round with a great game plan and just did a super job for us today.
On competing at her alma mater: I like to think my knowledge of the Stanford Golf Course gave us a competitive edge. There are some nuances to this course that I know, simply because I've played this course more than any other course in my life. The team trusts that I know this course like the back of my own hand and I'm getting a good feel for their golf games. That combination could really be a factor in how well we played today. I have a warm spot in my heart for Stanford and it's fun for me to come back here, but it's even more fun for me to come back here and play this well.
On the team's school record: Today's round backs what I've been saying all fall, 'We're good.' We stepped up and played like we're capable of playing today, and it was really rewarding as a coach. Nothing really rattled us out there, and it was the best case of 'Texas Tough' I've seen since I started coaching here two years ago. I was really impressed with their composure, competitiveness and toughness.
