Women's Cross Country places eighth at Big 12 Cross Country Championships

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The University of Texas Women's Cross Country team posted an eighth-place finish at the 2009 Cross Country Championship Saturday morning in Columbia, Mo. Texas earned 210 points and were led by senior Betzy Jimenez who placed in the top 20 for the second-straight year.
UT finished three spots ahead of Texas A&M (11th, 243 points) to earn one point in the annual State Farm Lone Star Showdown and now lead the Aggies with a 3.0-1.0 advantage.
Jimenez finished 19th after clocking a 22:17.64 on the 6K A.L. Gustin Golf Course. She was followed by sophomore Mia Behm who crossed the line eight seconds later in 22:25.66 for 24th. Senior Asia Myrland was the Longhorns' third finisher with a time of 22:50.37 for 36th place.
Rounding out scoring for Texas was senior Allison Mendez (55th, 23:23.73), freshman Melissa Mahoney (83rd, 24:18.41), sophomore Ginny Simon (84th, 24:21.10) and junior Jena Cuellar (94th, 25:26.97).
Texas Tech won the team title with a total of 38 points. Colorado placed second with 52 followed by Iowa State (85), Nebraska (143), Kansas (160), Kansas State (170) and Baylor (174). Colorado's Jenny Barringer won the individual title with a time of 20:27.46.
Up next for the Longhorns is the 2009 NCAA South Central Regional Championship on Nov. 14 in Waco, Texas.

Head Coach Steve Sisson: My feeling is that we're a better team than we ran today and I think we'll show that in two weeks. Sometimes unusual things happen and kids get into an environment and they forget who they are and what they are about. But I think it's a testament to our team that we still finished eighth on such an off day.
