Men's Cross Country finishes fifth at Big 12 Championships

The Texas men's cross country team finished fifth at the Big 12 Championship in Columbia, Mo. on Saturday. The Longhorns totaled 132 points to finish behind champion Oklahoma State (24), Colorado (56), Oklahoma (75) and Iowa State (107). UT finished one spot ahead of Texas A&M (171) to earn a point in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown.
"I am so proud of the guys today," assistant coach John Hayes said. "We can definitely run better but the effort was great. We need our 4-7 closer to our 1-2-3 and they have the ability to be there. We continue to improve and these guys are great to work with."
Sophomore Rory Tunningley was the Longhorns' top finisher, completing the 8,000-meter race in 25:33.21 to finish 16th overall. He was followed closely by senior Habben Berhane (25:33.97), who finished less than a second later to place 17th. Junior Brian Rhodes-Devey crossed the line in 20th place with a time of 25:38.74. Sophomore Brock Simmons (35th place) and freshman Austin Roth (47th place) also scored for the Longhorns.
"John is doing a great job with the distance program and the guys have really taken to his coaching," said head coach Bubba Thornton. "He laid out a plan and they executed really well. It was a solid performance for the group and you can see the progress they are making."
Next up, Texas will compete in the South Central Regional Championship in Waco on Nov. 14.
