No. 8 Men's Tennis defeats Lamar, UTSA

AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 8 Texas (8-2) finished off a day-night doubleheader sweep Friday with a 7-0 afternoon win over Texas-San Antonio and a 6-1 evening victory over Lamar at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
In the nightcap, Texas took the doubles point from Lamar, but not without a fight from the Cardinals. UT juniors Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala defeated Richard Filkuka and Marton Horvath at the second position, while UT senior Jonah Kane-West and junior Jon Wiegand rallied to defeat Mario Janjic and Diego Snyder at third doubles, 8-6. Lamar's Maciej Bogusz and Tobias Schneider held a 5-2 lead at first doubles over UT sophomores Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico and went on to defeat the Texas duo in a tiebreaker, 7-4.
Damico staked Texas to a 2-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Schneider, and Kane-West followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Filkuka at fifth singles. Corrie clinched the match for Texas with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Bogusz at second singles.
Kutrovsky added on to the Texas lead with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Janjic at first singles, and UT junior Rook Schellenberg outlasted Snyder at sixth singles, 6-4, 7-5. Lamar's Horvath defeated UT's Wiegand in a third-set super-tiebreaker to register the lone point for the Cardinals.
Texas opened the day with a sweep of the doubles session against Texas-San Antonio before finishing off the Roadrunners with a sweep of the six singles matches. Kane-West led off with a 6-3, 6-1 win at sixth singles over Jorge Delgado, and senior Miguel Reyes Varela followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win at fourth singles over Daniel Moreiras. Kutrovsky clinched the Texas victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Rodrigo Morgado at first singles.
Damico followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Andre Moreira at third singles, and Wiegand tallied a 6-1, 6-2 win at fifth singles over UTSA's Max Stratmann. Ed Corrie finished off the win with a 6-1, 6-0 win at second singles over Pedro Zanotelli.
Texas resumes play on Sunday, Feb. 22 when it hosts Arkansas at 12:30 p.m. at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
