Softball splits twin bill with Houston

AUSTIN, Texas -- After notching a 2-1 comeback win over Houston in game one, the Texas Softball team dropped the nightcap, 5-0, Wednesday night at McCombs Field. The Longhorns battled back from a 1-0 deficit to score two runs in the final two innings of game one to earn the victory, but failed to push across 11 stranded baserunners in the second game. The split moved the Longhorns to 21-10 on the year, while the Cougars moved to 12-12.
Texas sophomore starter Brittany Barnhill (10-5) notched the victory in game one, tossing a complete game, surrendering one run on seven hits, while fanning four. Houston righthander Amanda Crabtree (7-7) suffered the loss after throwing 6.1 innings and allowing two runs on four hits and striking out seven.
In the nightcap, junior starter Torrey Schroeder (9-3) was saddled with the loss after throwing 3.2 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits and striking out two. Houston hurler Baillie Lott (5-5) earned the win, notching a complete game, eight-hit shutout.
Senior centerfielder Kacie Gaskin headlined the Texas offense in game one, registering two hits, including the game winner, while freshman shortstop Lexy Bennett paced the Horns with two hits in game two of the twin bill.
Texas returns to action on Thursday, March 19 when it hosts North Texas. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
Game 1: Texas 2, Houston 1
Houston grabbed a 1-0 edge in the second used a walk and two hits to load the bases before Katy Beth Sherman reached on an error to plate Laurie Wagner. Texas sophomore catcher Amy Hooks' solo homer in the sixth evened the tally at one, but the Horns failed to push another across, stranding two runners. The Longhorns plated the game-winning run in the seventh, taking advantage of a one-out walk by senior leftfielder Crystal Saenz and an RBI double by Gaskin.
Game 2: Texas 0, Houston 5
The Cougars kicked off the scoring in the third when Sherman reached on an error to start the frame and after advancing on the error she took third on a wild pitch and scored on a second wild pitch. Houston flexed its long-ball muscle in the fourth, registering a pair of solo shots by Wagner and Melissa Gregson. Houston third baseman Christa Raley continued the home run onslaught in the sixth with a third solo homer that moved the tally to 4-0. The Cougars added to their lead later that frame with a double by Wagner and an RBI double by Haley Valis that pushed the lead to 5-0.
