Women's Track and Field posts three NCAA regional marks at Rice Bayou Classic

HOUSTON -- University of Texas freshman Destiny Lumas posted a pair of first-place finishes in the hurdle events to lead the Longhorns to a second-place finish at the 27th annual Victor Lopez Rice Bayou Classic, Saturday afternoon. Texas also picked up three NCAA regional marks at the two-day event.
Lumas successfully cleared all of the hurdles in the 100-meter race in 14.18 to win the event for the first time in her career at Texas. The newcomer followed up that performance by crossing the line in 1:03.19 for first place in the 400-meter hurdles. Freshman Angele Cooper finished second in the event with a time of 1:03.20. Ashley Starks also scored for Texas in the hurdles as she placed fifth in the 400-meter race (1:05.14) and eighth in the 100-meter (14.22).
Senior Alexandria Anderson and freshman Stacey-Ann Smith picked up two of UT's NCAA regional times of the meet in the 400-meter dash. Anderson clocked a 54.03 for second place followed by Smith who finished third in 54.14. Two more burnt orange sprinters crossed the line next with freshman Judy Nwosu placing fourth in 55.97 and sophomore Chantel Malone finishing in 56.11 for fifth.
Also running for the Horns was freshman LaKeidra Stewart, who placed fifth in the 200-meter dash in a time of 24.64.
In the field events, freshman Amanda Van Dyke posted her first NCAA regional mark of the season in the shot put with a toss of 47-11.75 (14.62m) for second place. Freshman Okwuke Okolie also placed in the event with a personal-best throw of 42-9.50 (13.04m) for sixth.
Van Dyke also set a PR in the discus with her mark of 139-0 (42.37m).
A trio of Longhorn freshman placed in the pole vault with Jessica Doyle leading the group after clearing 11-5.75 (3.50m) for second place. Adrienne Ballou and Nina Moreno both cleared 10-6 (3.20m) to finish seventh and eighth, respectively.
Freshman Victoria Lucas rounded out scoring for the Horns with a third-place finish in the high jump. Lucas successfully cleared 5-7 (1.70m) for third.
Texas finished second with 92 points, just 6.50 points behind winner and host Rice University.
The Longhorns return to the track on Wednesday, April 1, with the start of the 82nd annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
