AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 14 Texas (17-5, 4-2 Big 12) swept the doubles session and claimed five of six singles matches in a 6-1 victory over Nebraska Sunday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
The win locks up the No. 3 seed for Texas at the Big 12 Championships in Norman, Okla. The Longhorns will take on sixth-seeded host Oklahoma on Friday, April 24 at 3 p.m. Central.
Texas opened with a sweep of the doubles session. Sophomores Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico dealt Nebraska's 89th-ranked duo of David Bendheim and Calin Paar an 8-4 defeat at first doubles. The Longhorns nailed down the doubles point at third singles, where senior Miguel Reyes Varela and junior Olivier Sajous posted an 8-6 win over the Huskers' Francois Van Impe and Hendrik Stahmer.
UT closed out the doubles session at second doubles, where sophomores Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala dealt Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim an 8-6 defeat.
Corrie added to the Texas lead at second singles when he defeated Bendheim by a 7-5, 6-4 count. Kutrovsky pushed the cushion to 3-0 at first doubles, where he defeated Nebraska's 101st-ranked Aumueller, 6-3, 7-6 (8). Damico clinched the match for Texas with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win at the third slot over NU's Paar.
Zavala hung on for a three-set win over NU's Lindheim at fifth singles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Senior Jonah Kane-West rallied from an opening-set defeat to post a 6-7 (2), 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) win over Van Impe at sixth singles to push the Texas lead to 6-0. NU's Stahmer registered the lone point for the Huskers at fourth singles, where he outlasted UT's Sajous, 7-6 (9), 6-7 (2), 1-0 (11-9).
"It's nice to get a win on Senior Day, and I was really excited to see Jonah Kane-West get a win, being a senior," UT coach Michael Center said. "I felt like we did a good job of being in the match at all nine positions, which we've talked about doing. We had a chance at all nine spots, but overall, it was a really good effort against one of the best Nebraska teams I've seen.
"We've got a lot to play for now at the Big 12 Championships," Center continued. "We're the No. 3 seed and we'll try to solidify one of the top-16 spots in the ITA rankings to have a chance to host the NCAA first and second rounds."
