No. 11 Men's Tennis falls to No. 7 Baylor, 6-1

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas sophomore Kellen Damico tallied a straight-set win over Baylor's David Galic to lead the Longhorns (14-4, 2-1 Big 12) in a 6-1 defeat to the seventh-ranked Bears (17-5, 2-0 Big 12) Thursday evening at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Texas opened the match by putting up a lengthy fight in the doubles session before Baylor seized the doubles point. UT senior Miguel Reyes Varela and junior Olivier Sajous posted an 8-4 defeat over the Bears' Dominik Mueller and Julian Bley at the third slot, but Baylor took the remaining two matches to earn the doubles point. BU's David Galic and Jordan Rux registered an 8-4 win over UT sophomore Ed Corrie and Damico, and Maros Horny and Denes Lukacs closed out the session with a 9-7 win over UT juniors Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala.
Damico evened the tally at one with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 win over Galic at fifth singles, but the Bears took the remaining matches to close out the victory. Baylor assumed a 2-1 lead when Lukacs dealt Kutrovsky a 6-1, 6-4 defeat at the first slot, and BU's Horny added a 6-3, 6-4 win over UT's Zavala at sixth singles. After dropping his first set at second singles to Baylor's Rux, Texas' Corrie rallied from a 4-1 second-set deficit to take a 6-5 lead. Rux forced a tiebreaker, where he prevailed, 7-4, to clinch the match for the Bears.
After dropping his first set at third singles, Texas' Reyes Varela rallied to take the second set, 6-3, but Baylor's Mueller prevailed in the third set, 6-4, to push the lead to 5-1. Baylor's Attila Bucko closed out the match with a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4 win over UT's Sajous at fourth singles.
Texas resumes conference play on Sunday, April 5 when it takes on Texas Tech. First serve is set for 2 p.m. Central at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
