No. 11 Men's Tennis holds off Texas Tech, 4-3

AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 11 Texas (15-4, 3-1 Big 12) took the doubles point and held off a furious Texas Tech rally in singles play on its way to a 4-3 victory over the Red Raiders (10-9, 0-2 Big 12) Sunday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Texas opened the match by taking two of three doubles matches to seize the doubles point. Texas Tech claimed the first victory at third doubles, but juniors Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala followed with an 8-4 win at the second slot over the Red Raiders' Michael Breler and Sinisa Markovic. Texas nailed down the doubles point at the first slot, where sophomores Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico tallied an 8-5 win over Raony Carvalho and Christian Rojmar.
The Longhorns quickly added to their lead at sixth singles, where senior Jonah Kane-West made short work of Tech's James Wilson and posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory. The Red Raiders' Gonzalo Escobar put Tech on the board with a 6-1, 6-3 win over UT's Olivier Sajous at third singles, but Texas responded with wins at the fourth and fifth singles positions to clinch the team victory.
Damico pushed the Texas lead to 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Milos Kustudija at fourth singles, and Zavala clinched the Longhorns' victory at No. 5 singles by outlasting Tech's David Gonzalez, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The Red Raiders ended the match by claiming a pair of three-set victories at the second and first singles positions.
Texas resumes play on Thursday, April 9 when it hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6 p.m. Central.
