NEW YORK -- Former Longhorn basketball star D.J. Augustin has been selected to the T-Mobile NBA All-Rookie Second Team, the NBA announced today.
The selection of Augustin gives the Longhorns three straight years with a player on the All-Rookie Team, following Kevin Durant, who was a first-team selection and the NBA Rookie of the Year last season, and LaMarcus Aldridge, who was also named to the first team, two seasons ago.
Augustin appeared in 72 games (12 starts) for the Charlotte Bobcats this season and averaged 11.8 points, 3.5 assists and 1.8 rebounds in 26.5 minutes. The Bobcats drafted Augustin with the ninth overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.
At Texas, Augustin earned both consensus first-team All-America honors and first-team Academic All-America accolades in his sophomore season, becoming just the 15th player in NCAA history to earn both in the same year. The fifth player in UT history to earn consensus first-team All-America honors and the winner of the Bob Cousy Award as the nation's top collegiate point guard, Augustin led the Big 12 Conference in assists (5.8 apg) and ranked second in the league in scoring (19.2 ppg).
In 73 career games at UT, Augustin averaged 16.9 points and 6.2 assists per contest. He ranks fifth on the school's career assists list (452), fourth in three-point percentage (.402), ninth in free throw percentage (.808) and 19th in scoring (1,234 points).
The All-Rookie First Team consisted of Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls), O.J. Mayo (Memphis Grizzlies), Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder), Brook Lopez (New Jersey Nets) and Michael Beasley (Miami Heat).
While in addition to Augustin, the second team included Eric Gordon (Los Angeles Clippers), Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves), Mario Chalmers (Miami Heat), Marc Gasol (Memphis Grizzlies) and Rudy Fernandez (Portland Trail Blazers)
The voting panel consisted of the NBA's 30 head coaches, who were asked to select five players for the first team and five players for the second team, regardless of position. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players on their own team. Two points were awarded for first team votes and one for second team votes.
