AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Soccer earned its second-straight win Sunday afternoon as it defeated Kentucky, 2-0, out at Mike A Myers Field. Sophomore Kylie Doniak and junior Kirsten Birkhold both scored to move UT to 3-3-0 on the season. Texas also held the Wildcats to zero shots on goal and picked up its second shutout of the year.
Doniak netted her second goal of the season in the 15th minute to put the Longhorns up 1-0. Sophomore Amanda Lisberger sent in a perfect pass on the ground across the box to Doniak who one-touched it with her left foot to the back right of the net for the goal.
Texas continued its offensive production in the 42nd minute when Birkhold found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Freshman Erin Child got the play started when she volleyed the ball into the middle of the box. Senior Stephanie Gibson then headed the ball over to Birkhold who scored when UK's keeper Sydney Hiance came out to challenge.
Birkhold, who came off the bench in the first half, becomes the eighth Longhorn to score this year while Doniak is just the second Longhorn to net more than one goal this season. Child and Gibson, also playing off the bench, recorded their first assists this season.
Texas outshot the Wildcats, 12-4, and was the first team to score on UK in 306 minutes, who entered the match
The Longhorns continue their four-match homestand as they host Washington State on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Central.
POST MATCH QUOTES
Junior forward Kirsten Birkhold
On the roughness of the game: They were tough. Our problem lately has been sliding and tackling, but we picked it up today and Friday. We can play with them and we did it.
On her thoughts of the game overall: I think it was good. Our team played really well. We came out and battled. Sunday games are always a little bit tougher because everyone is tired from Friday but we won.
On her goal: Their back post was open most of the game. I saw Gibby [Stephanie Gibson] running and was like `Flick! Flick!' and she flicked it and I just hit it in off that.
Head Coach Chris Petrucelli
On the physical aspect of the game: It was a hard game first of all because of fatigue. You know, playing Friday night and then turning around and playing Sunday afternoon. Games are about how tough you can be and how hard you can play. And today our bench really helped us. We had girls come off the bench and raise the level in the middle of the first half and really had an impact on what happened in the game. But we had two teams that really played hard.
On the positives and the negatives: The positive was that we got a shutout and we really limited the amount of chances that we gave them. And they had a couple of good followers. From that standpoint, that was one of the best things. When you win 2-0, it's hard to say that there were any negatives.
On how they are going to move forward: We know that each weekend gets harder and the challenges get bigger every weekend. And the more you win, the more important the next game is. So we're going to have to keep getting better. We were good this weekend, but next weekend we are going to have to be even better.
