The Texas men's cross country team finished first at the Texas State Invitational in San Marcos, Texas, and participated in three scored dual meets in Tulsa, Okla. to open the 2009 season on Saturday. In San Marcos, with a squad made up primarily of freshmen, Texas scored 17 points to win the event ahead of second-place Incarnate Word (41) and Angelo State (77), who rounded out the top three. In Tulsa, the Horns defeated Oklahoma and fell to Oral Roberts and Tulsa.
"We ran as a pack today," Hayes said. "For the early season, I thought we ran well. As far as our freshmen go, I think they ran really well in their first collegiate race. I'm proud of them. We're right where we need to be at this time of the year."
First-year runner CJ Jessett finished the five-mile Texas State Invitational first in a time of 26:25.6. Freshmen Austin Roth, Collin Smith and Leon Dean finished behind Jessett allowing the Longhorns to claim the top four spots.
Sophomore Rory Tunningley was the Longhorns' top performer in Tulsa, running the four-mile race in 21:08. Junior Rob Wetzel, sophomore Lorin Wilson and junior Brad Lowry finished a second behind Tunningley with a time of 21:09. Senior Habben Berhane and junior Brian Rhodes-Devey rounded out the pack for the Texas team in 21:14.
The Longhorns will return to action Oct. 17 at the Princeton Invitational.
