Engle's triple-double paces No. 2 Volleyball past No. 4 Hawaii, 3-1

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Senior setter Ashley Engle recorded a triple-double as the No. 2 Texas Volleyball team knocked off No. 4 Hawaii, 3-1, Saturday night at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic. The 25-11, 25-22, 22-25, 25-11 victory improved the Longhorns to 4-0 on the year and dropped the Rainbow Wahine to 4-1. Texas wraps up non-conference play on Sunday, Sept. 6 against No. 19 Saint Louis at 8 p.m. Central.
Texas took control of the first set from the start, using a 6-1 run fueled by three kills from Engle to open the match. The Horns added a 7-1 run highlighted by four kills from junior All-America outside hitter Juliann Faucette that moved the tally to 13-3. Texas stretched its lead late in the set and back-to-back kills from Faucette ended the set, 25-11.
The Longhorns fell in a hole early in the second stanza, allowing the Wahine to take a 12-6 advantage. UT battled back behind three kills and a block from Faucette to narrow the margin to 15-13 before a 6-1 Texas run paced by two Engle kills put the Horns ahead, 22-20. A kill and a block by sophomore middle blocker Rachael Adams down the stretch helped UT complete its 25-22 comeback victory.
Hawaii led the third frame from wire-to-wire, pushing the lead to its widest margin at the 19-14 mark on an ace by setter Dani Mafua. UT shrank the lead to 20-18 with a 3-0 rally, but UH answered with a 4-0 run of its own to force set-point at 24-18. Texas responded with four straight points, but a kill by outside hitter Kanani Danielson closed out the set for Hawaii, 25-22.
Texas bounced back to start the fourth, jumping out to a 12-4 lead behind a two kills apiece from Engle and Faucette. The Longhorns widened the margin to 19-7 on a service ace by Hooker before taking advantage of three Hawaii errors that forced match-point at 24-9. A kill by Adams closed out the set with the Horns earning a 25-11 win.
Engle headlined the Horns with 13 kills, 38 assists and 13 digs, while Faucette tallied a team-high 18 kills on .318 hitting. Senior All-America outside hitter Destinee Hooker added 12 kills, while Adams posted a career-high 11 kills on .846 hitting (zero errors) and six total blocks.

- In the first set, Texas out-hit Hawaii .400-to-.121 as Juliann Faucette connected for six kills on eight swings and committed no errors. Ashley Engle added five kills on eight swings and did not commit an error in the set.
- Ashley Engle's triple-double was the first by a Texas player since Jenny Andrew accomplished the feat against Kansas State on Oct. 15, 2003.
