TUCSON, Ariz. -- No. 3 Texas (6-1) picked up five individual victories but could not make up ground on No. 2 Arizona (7-2), as the Wildcats finished a 201-152 victory over the Longhorns in the second day of the teams' dual meet at Arizona's Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
Sophomore Leah Gingrich notched the first individual win of the day for Texas in the 1,650-yard freestyle, where she took top honors in 16 minutes, 42.53 seconds. Classmate Karlee Bispo led the Longhorns' contingent in the 200 freestyle, where she was victorious in 1:48.06.
Sophomore Kathleen Hersey tallied her first of two wins on the day in the 200 butterfly in 1:57.98, and Gingrich followed in third place at 2:01.30. Bispo tacked on an additional victory in the 50 freestyle, where she led a one-two Texas finish in 23.38. Freshman Bethany Adams took second in 23.45.
Hersey, the 2009 NCAA runner-up in the 200 individual medley, scored her second win of the day in that event at 1:59.48, and Bispo added a third-place finish in 2:02.80.
Texas resumes competition on Saturday, Feb. 6 at SMU.
POST-MEET COMMENTS
Texas head women's swimming and diving coach Kim Brackin
"I am definitely not thrilled with how we raced overall, but this meet was an important measuring stick for us. I don't think it was a lack of want on our part; it just wasn't there. I thought we had some good improvement with some individual races.
"Karlee Bispo was much improved in both her 200 freestyle and her 50 freestyle, and it was nice to see a good IM from her. Bethany Adams had a strong meet. She was key on our relays, and that second-place finish the 50 (freestyle) was exciting. Kathleen Hersey continued to race well, especially in her 200 butterfly."
