KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 30 Texas (1-2) rallied from a 3-1 deficit to even the match but fell short in its bid for a come-from-behind victory, as the Longhorns fell to No. 27 TCU (1-1) by a 4-3 count Saturday in a five-and-a-half hour match at Tennessee's Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center.
TCU opened the day by winning two doubles matches to secure the doubles point. The Horned Frogs' Gaby Mastromarino and Idunn Hertzberg topped Texas senior Sarah Lancaster and junior Caroline Larsson by an 8-6 count at third doubles. TCU put the doubles point away at the first slot, where Kayla Duncan and Nina Munch-Soegaard edged UT junior Amanda Craddock and sophomore Krista Damico by a 9-7 count. The remaining match at second doubles was suspended upon TCU's clinching of the doubles point.
Texas freshman Aeriel Ellis put the Longhorns on the board at first singles with a 6-3, 7-6 win over TCU's Munch-Soegaard. TCU reclaimed the lead at fourth singles, where Hertzberg rallied for a 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 win over the Horns' Craddock. TCU's Duncan stretched the Horned Frogs' lead to 3-1 when she rallied for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over UT's Damico at second singles.
The match at third singles pitting Texas' Corovic against TCU's Katariina Tuohimaa progressed into a third-set tie-breaker. A Tuohimaa win would have clinched the victory for TCU, but at 5-all in the tie-breaker, Corovic took the next two points to win the match and keep the Horns alive. Soon after, Texas' Larsson finished off TCU's Maria Babanova by a 6-1, 7-6 count at fifth singles to even the match.
At sixth singles, TCU's Mastromarino took the first set off of Texas' Lancaster in a tie-breaker , 7-4, and rallied to take the second set, 6-4 to nail down the victory for the Horned Frogs.
Texas resumes play on Saturday, Feb. 6 when it hosts Stanford at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. First serve is set for noon Central.
