Texas junior LB Keenan Robinson has been named a semifinalist for the 2010 Butkus Award, honoring the nation's top linebacker, the Butkus Foundation has announced.
Robinson will attempt to become the second Longhorn to win the award, following Derrick Johnson in 2004. Johnson was also a finalist in 2003, as was Sergio Kindle in 2009.
Robinson leads the team with 57 tackles, to go along with four TFL, one sack, one INT and two fumble recoveries in 2010. He was named the nation's top LB by the College Football Performance Awards and the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts against Rice, which included six tackles, a 10-yard fumble return for a TD, one INT and one TFL.
For his career, Robinson has posted 155 tackles (88 solo), 3.5 sacks, 11 TFL, one INT, two fumble recoveries, two pressures and six PBU in 32 games (20 starts).
The Butkus Award is selected by a 51-person panel comprised of scouts, coaches and journalists. Selectors follow all rules of their leagues, including limitations on contact with players. Individual votes remain completely confidential.
Finalists for the 26th Annual Butkus Award will be announced November 23, and winners notified by December 8.
Considered one of the greatest football players in history, Butkus was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979, following his career with the Chicago Bears, University of Illinois and Chicago Vocational School. Meanwhile, his son Matt was a defensive lineman for the University of Southern California's 1990 Rose Bowl winning team and joins his father in philanthropic efforts.
