Baseball celebrates 2010 season

AUSTIN, Texas -- Cole Green and Cameron Rupp were named the Texas Baseball Most Valuable Pitcher and Most Valuable Player, respectively, at the Longhorns' 2010 Baseball Awards Banquet on Sunday afternoon.
Green was 11-2 with a 2.74 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 111.2 innings. He logged four complete games and two shutouts in 16 starts and held opponents to a .218 batting average. In nine conference starts, Green went 6-0 with three complete games, two shutouts and a 1.46 ERA. He allowed just 46 hits and 16 walks while striking out 38 over 68.0 innings. The junior right-hander became the fifth Longhorn to earn Big 12 Pitcher of the Year. He earned Louisville Slugger All-America First Team and was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round with the 133rd overall pick.
Rupp earned All-Big 12 First Team, the first time he earned all-conference after being an honorable mention in 2008 and 2009. The catcher hit .304 with 50 runs, 13 doubles, 10 home runs and 54 RBI on the season.
Rupp was also honored with the Team Captain Award, voted on by the squad after the season.
Tant Shepherd was tabbed the Lowe's Most Improved Player. Shepherd led the squad with a .337 batting average, 64 runs, 83 hits, 19 doubles and 14 stolen bases as a junior. He added two triples, eight home runs and 37 RBI. In league play, he batted .367 with 29 runs, 12 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 18 RBI and eight stolen bases in 27 games. He was named All-Big 12 Second Team, his first all-conference honor.
Riley Boening was voted by the players as the Teammate of the Year. Boening, who missed the entire 2009 season due to injury, did not see action in 2010.
The UT Athletics Student Services issued three awards for academic accomplishment. Kendal Carrillo earned the Student Services Most Inspired Academic Performance Award which goes to the student-athlete who has demonstrated an amazing performance in the classroom. Carrillo will graduate in the spring with a master's degree in public accounting from the McCombs School of Business and currently owns a 3.21 grade-point average. Austin Dicharry garnered the Academic Achievement Award which goes to the student-athlete with the highest GPA on the team. Dicharry owns a 3.47 GPA in advertising/corporate communication. Cole Green earned the Longhorn Academic Spirit Award which goes to the student-athlete who has demonstrated the spirit of the academic commitment of a student-athlete at Texas. Green was selected for his decision to come back to Texas for his senior year and graduate this spring with his senior classmates.
The banquet concluded with the squad being presented with their Big 12 Championship rings.
