AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas Soccer team suffered a 2-1 double overtime loss to Oklahoma Sunday night out at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Sooners scored in the 103rd minute to move Texas to 11-4-3 on the season and 4-3-2 in Big 12 play while OU is now 10-6-2 and 5-2-1 in league action.
Oklahoma got on the board first in the 10th minute off of a goal from Whitney Palmer. Sooner Caitlin Mooney sent a cross into the middle of the box that junior defender Lucy Keith attempted to head out but ended up being sent back into the UT box where sophomore keeper Alexa Gaul had come off her line. Palmer charged in and headed it just over Gaul for the score.
Just 10 minutes later, Doniak intercepted a pass from the Oklahoma defense on the far right side of the field and brought the ball all the way in to the top of the box before firing a powerful shot up into the upper right corner of the net for the equalizer. The goal was Doniak's second in as many games and fifth overall on the season.
The rest of the regulation was mainly played in the middle third of the field with OU getting four shots in the second half to Texas' three. With neither team able to connect, the match went into overtime.
Texas controlled the majority of the first overtime creating two opportunities including a late one-on-one between freshman Gabby Zarnegar and OU keeper Kelsey Devonshire but Zarnegar sent her shot right into Devonshire's hands.
In the second OT it was OU's Dria Hampton that was able to provide the golden goal sending a long ball in from about 20 yards out on the right side. The shot hit the upper corner of the far post and bounced back into the net for the gamewinner.
Texas held a 12-11 shot advantage and posted eight corners to Oklahoma's two. Gaul made six saves while Devonshire recorded four.
The Longhorns close the regular season out this Friday, Oct. 29 with a home match against Texas A&M in the annual State Farm Lone Star Showdown at 7 p.m. Central.
POST MATCH QUOTES
Head Coach Chris Petrucelli
On the fluidity in the first half and the difference in play in the second half: I think the wind was a big factor. We had plenty of chances to win the game and even in the second half we had good goal scoring chances and same with the first over time. We just didn't take advantage of the chances that we had.
On focus of this upcoming week's practice: We are good when we pass the ball and we get the ball on the ground and we knock it around and if we get taken out of that it is hard for us as it was tonight in the second half. So we have to find a way to get the ball on the ground a little more.
Junior midfielder Kylie Doniak
On the goal scored: I was surprised the ball got to me after that kick and then I just knew I wanted to go to goal and I didn't think about anything besides getting that shot off, that was my mindset and thank goodness it went in.
On collaboration with Hannah Higgins: Hannah and I have worked really hard this year just working off of each other. I think we both have a complimentary style of play where we can work off each other. She is fast and dribbles and I like to pass it to her and it just works well.
On this being an offensively aggressive game: Every game we are trying to go forward and we want to score and if we put our attack on the other team it shows we are coming to win and that is our game plan.
