CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Texas' soccer season ended with a 3-1 loss to James Madison Friday night in the First Round of the NCAA Championship at Fetzer Field on the campus of the University of North Carolina. The Longhorns finished the year with an 11-6-4 record while James Madison (15-6-1) advances to the Second Round to face North Carolina.
JMU got on the board first in the 17th minute when Kelly Germain headed in a long cross from Katie Menzie. Germain's ball went into the upper right corner of the net just past keeper Alexa Gaul.
The Longhorns had a couple of good looks in the first half, two coming straight on from junior Kylie Doniak and one header from sophomore Kristin Cummins.
JMU scored their second goal in the 49th minute from Katie Menzie. Gaul had made a diving save on Teresa Rynier's initial shot but the ball bounced off her hands and after a couple of Texas defenders attempted to clear the ball out, Menzie was able to get her foot on it and send it in for the score.
Texas scored with eight minutes remaining when sophomore Kirsten Birkhold sent in a low cross to the middle of the box. Doniak came charging into the box and volleyed it in over JMU keeper Diane Wszalek for her ninth goal of the year.
The Dukes responded less than a minute later when Cate Tisinger brought the ball into the box. Gaul came charging out to stop the play but right when she dove, Tisinger sent a long ball that rolled into the far corner of the net.
Gaul and Wszalek each made five saves while JMU outshot the Longhorns 19-12.
