Gnidula scores first career tally in defeat
COLUMBIA, S.C. — The University of Texas soccer team couldn't contain 10th-ranked South Carolina, as the Gamecocks downed the Longhorns, 5-1, Thursday evening at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium.
South Carolina (10-1-4, 4-0-3 SEC) mounted three goals over an 18-minute stretch to grab control and never look back in its third-ever meeting against Texas (3-10-1, 1-6 SEC).
Katie Shea Collins registered a pair of tallies and dished out two assists to lead the attack for the Gamecocks.
Cuyler Zulauf broke the ice in the 25th minute, burying a perfect feed from Collins at the six-yard box.
Less than eight minutes later, Collins doubled the advantage, driving a right-footed shot into the back of the net.
In the 42nd minute, Collins continued her standout performance by setting up Anna Young for her first career goal. Off a pass from Collins, Young settled the ball at her feet and ripped a shot through traffic to extend the cushion to 3-0.
Out of the break, South Carolina continued its offensive outburst with a tally in the 66th minute. Reagan Schubach capitalized off a set piece, heading home a service from Alexa Pino.
Annie Gnidula put the Longhorns on the board, scoring her first career goal just two minutes later. Gnidula soared above the defense to finish off a lofted cross from Ava McDonald.
With Gnidula's tally, 17 of the Longhorns' 19 goals have been recorded by underclassmen, including all eight in conference action.
While the freshman's memorable moment sparked the visiting bench, Collins stole the show. The South Carolina star punctuated her career night, capping off her third multi-goal effort of the season in the 77th minute.
Following a six-day layoff, Texas hosts Georgia on Sept. 16. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
