COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Texas men's track and field team won three events to help the Big 12 defeat the SEC and Conference USA at the three-conference challenge on Saturday. The Big 12 scored 309.5 points to easily outdistance the SEC, which scored 143.5 points, and C-USA (116 points).
Sophomore Jacob Thormaehlen led a group of three Texas shot putters that posted marks over 60 feet. Thormaehlen won the event after improving his personal best by almost a foot with a throw of 61-11. He now stands eighth on UT's all-time performers list. Freshman Hayden Baillio placed second with a put of 61-8.50. Baillio's personal best of 62-7.25, set earlier this season, ranks him fifth on UT's all-time performers list. Junior Brandon Drenon claimed third with a personal-best 60-3, an improvement of two feet. He now ranks 10th on UT's all-time performers list.
In the middle distances, both senior Tevas Everett and junior Brian Rhodes-Devey picked up victories. Everett clocked a season-best and provisional 1:49.79 to take the 800 meters, while Rhodes-Devey notched a personal best of 4:09.44 to win the mile.
Freshman Trevante Rhodes placed fourth in the 60 meters after posting two personal bests. Rhodes qualified second in the prelims with a PR of 6.83. He improved on that in the finals, clocking a 6.82. Junior Andre Thomas claimed seventh in the 400 meters with a personal-best 47.66.
The Longhorns will take next weekend off and then travel to Ames, Iowa for the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26 and 27.
