AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 4 Texas (8-1) split its 12-man squad into two teams and knocked off Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas-San Antonio by identical 7-0 margins Saturday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
In its first matches since reaching the semifinals at the ITA National Team Indoors, Texas won all six doubles matches against A&M-Corpus and UTSA before sweeping the two teams in singles play.
Texas' Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico knocked off UTSA's Martin Ayala and Pedro Zanotelli by an 8-1 count at first doubles, and Vasko Mladenov teamed up with Jon Wiegand to register an 8-5 win at second doubles over the Roadrunners' Tyler Brown and Max Stratmann. Ben Chen and Rook Schellenberg added an 8-3 win at third doubles over UTSA's Rodrigo Morgado and Daniel Moreiras.
Corrie, ranked No. 4 nationally in this week's ITA singles rankings, made short work of the Roadrunners' Brown, as he dealt him a 6-2, 6-2 defeat at first singles. Damico finished off Morgado in three sets at second singles, and Mladenov quickly dispatched Ayala at third singles, 6-0, 6-2.
Chen posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Moreiras at fourth singles, and the Longhorns' Wiegand notched a 7-6, 6-2 win at the fifth slot over UTSA's Stratmann. Texas' Schellenberg added a 6-4, 7-5 win over UTSA's Zanotelli.
Texas found similar success against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Seniors Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala knocked off the Islanders' James Langford and Dmitry Novikov by an 8-3 count at first doubles, while freshmen Alex Hilliard and Daniel Whitehead added an 8-3 win at the second slot over Duje Janjic and Robert Raguz. Sophomore Jean Andersen and freshman Chris Camillone added an 8-4 win at third doubles over Nathan Robinson and Andrew Maingot.
Kutrovsky quickly put away Novikov at first singles, 6-2, 6-0, and Andersen outlasted Langford at second singles, 6-1, 6-4. Zavala finished off Raguz by a 6-4, 7-5 count at third singles, and Whitehead, the last man on the courts at fourth singles, edged the Islanders' Pavlov in a third-set match tiebreak.
Camillone posted an easy 6-2, 6-0 win over Robinson at sixth singles, and Hilliard defeated Maingot at sixth singles, 6-1, 6-4.
"It was a really good day for us," said UT head coach Michael Center. "We've never split our team into two squads, so I was not quite sure what to expect. But, everybody came out and played with good energy, and we're continuing to improve. Overall, I was pleased with what happened today."
Texas resumes competition on Thursday, Feb. 25 at Rice, who will enter the match ranked 23rd in the nation.
"We've had so many close matches with Rice through the years, and we're expecting the same thing on Thursday," Center said. "They have one of the best players in the country in Bruno Rosa. Rice will be a real challenge for us."
