HOUSTON -- No. 4 Texas (9-1) took the doubles point and tacked on singles wins from Ed Corrie, Kellen Damico and Josh Zavala, as the Longhorns posted a 4-3 victory over No. 24 Rice Thursday afternoon at Rice's Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
UT swept the doubles session to assume an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore Jean Andersen and freshman Daniel Whitehead teamed up at third doubles to post an 8-4 win over the Owls' Isamu Tachibana and Jonathan Chang. Texas clinched the doubles point at the second slot, where Corrie and Damico dealt Rice's Michael Nuesslein and Christian Saravia an 8-4 defeat.
UT wrapped up the doubles session with a win at the first slot, where the eighth-ranked duo of senior Dimitar Kutrovsky and Zavala posted an 8-6 win over the 31st-ranked duo of Bruno Rosa and Oscar Podlewski.
Texas assumed a 3-0 lead on the strength of straight-set wins from Corrie and Damico. Corrie knocked off the Owls' 116th-ranked Podlewski at second singles, and Damico dealt Nuesslein a 6-2, 6-4 defeat at third singles.
Rice would rally with a pair of wins at fourth and sixth singles, but Texas put the match away at fifth singles, where Zavala rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Rice's Tachibana. The Owls' 16th-ranked Rosa topped UT's 13th-ranked Kutrovsky at first singles, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
Texas returns to action on Sunday when it hosts St. Edward's and Laredo Community College at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. Both matches will begin at 1 p.m. Central. The Texas-Laredo match was originally scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
