AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 5 Texas (16-2) claimed a hard-fought doubles point and collected singles wins from the bottom of its lineup in a 4-3 win over No. 24 Pepperdine (6-8) Sunday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Texas fought off a tough test from Pepperdine in the doubles session but went on to secure the doubles point. UT freshman Vasko Mladenov and senior Jon Wiegand teamed up for an 8-5 win over Sebastian Fanselow and Alejandro Moreno at third doubles. The Waves took the Horns to tiebreakers in the remaining two doubles matches, and Texas pulled out a win at the second slot to secure the point. Junior Ed Corrie and Jean Andersen outlasted Pepperdine's Finn Tearney and Hugh Clarke by a 9-8 (4) count at second doubles to nail down the point.
Pepperdine answered with a decisive win at first singles and assumed the lead at third singles, where Alex Llompart defeated UT junior Kellen Damico by a 6-3, 6-0 count. UT evened the match at fifth singles, where senior Josh Zavala dealt Pepperdine's Tearney a 6-2, 6-3 defeat.
The Longhorns put the match away with consecutive victories at the fourth and sixth singles slots. Andersen finished off Mousheg Hovhannisyan by a 7-6, 6-3 count at fourth singles, and Mladenov clinched the victory for Texas at the sixth position with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Daniel Moss. The Waves registered the final point when Fanselow outlasted UT's Corrie in a third-set match tiebreak at second singles.
Texas opens conference play on Friday, March 26 when it hosts Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. Central.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
"The doubles was very close. We had the chance to serve for all three matches. They hung around and stuck their nose in there and forced us to win one in a tiebreaker to get the doubles point. They took us out quickly at Nos. 1 and 3 singles, and we won the match at the bottom part of our lineup. We were able to win with our depth today. That's a strength of our team, and I give those guys credit today for doing the job."
