WACO, Texas -- University of Texas freshman Natasha Masterson continued to etch her name into the Texas record books as she cleared the second-highest pole vault height in UT history Saturday afternoon despite a windy and rainy day at the Michael Johnson Invite in Waco.
Masterson posted a height of 13-9.25 to win the event and leave her two feet shy of tying the UT record (13-11.25, Ashley Laughlin - 2008). Along with being the best mark reached by a Longhorn since April of 2008, Masterson's clearance also outdid her previous personal best by just under six inches (13-3.5, 4.05m).
In the running events, sophomore Stacey-Ann Smith led the Horns with her third-place finish in the 400m invitational, clocking a season-best 53.35. Freshman Alicia Peterson crossed the line just after Smith in 53.68 for fifth in a field that included former Longhorn and NCAA 100m Outdoor Champion Alexandria Anderson. Peterson also finished fourth in the 200m with a season-best time of 24.19.
A pair of Longhorn field specialists also picked up wins on Saturday with Jordyn Brown taking the top spot in the shot put (50-6, 15.39m) and sophomore Okwukwe Okolie winning the discus with a mark of 152-11 (46.60m). Sophomore Chantel Malone placed second in the long jump with a leap of 19-11.5 (6.08m).
Texas also picked up top five finishes in the 800m run with sophomores Julie Amthor and Mia Behm finishing in third (2:13.82) and fourth (2:14.02), respectively.
Up next for Texas is the 2010 Penn Relays, held Thurs.-Sat, April 22-24 at historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Penn.
