Women's Golf takes third at Big 12 Championship

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Texas Women's Golf team (302-297-306=905, +41) captured third place at the Big 12 Championship with a 41-over-par 905 on Sunday afternoon. Senior Shannon Fish (75-72-78) recorded the Longhorns' top finish with a 9-over 225 to tie for 11th place.
Sophomore Nicole Vandermade (75-77-74=226, +10) carded the final-round low score for UT at 2-over 74 on the 6,237-yard Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. Vandermade was even through 16 holes of play with four birdies and as many bogeys, but additional bogeys on her final two holes pushed her to 2-over on the day. She finished her second Big 12 Championship tied for 15th place. Fish saved par on the par-5 18th hole with a five-foot putt to secure a one-stroke lead for Texas over fourth-place Iowa State (300-305-301=906). Her approach shot on her 54th hole landed in the rough behind the green, but she made up-and-down before sinking her par putt.
Competing in their first league championship, Texas' trio of freshmen finished within seven strokes of one another. Haley Stephens (75-77-77=229, +13) recorded her second-consecutive round of 5-over 77 and finished tied for 20th at 13-over 229. Madison Pressel (77-79-77=233, +17) also carded a 77 and finished four strokes behind Stephens and tied for 35th. Desiree Dubreuil (83-71-82=236, +20) rounded out the trio at 236 and tied for 44th place.
Texas competed in the conference championship without the presence of third-year head coach Martha Richards. Richards, who led the Longhorns to a third-place Big 12 Championship finish in 2008 and sixth place last year, is tending to an immediate family member's illness at this time and is currently in California.
Texas A&M (305-295-296=896, +32) overcame 36-hole leader Oklahoma State (293-296-308=897, +33) for its fourth Big 12 title. The battle between the two teams came down to the final hole when OSU's Victoria Park was forced to three putt for bogey in the next-to-last group.
The Cowgirls' Caroline Hedwall (70-67-73) claimed medalist honors with a dominating 6-under 210. Baylor's Hannah Burke (76-71-71=218, +2) finished in second place, while Park (70-71-78) came in third with a 3-over 219.
Texas will now await Monday's announcement of the NCAA Championship Regional selections at 3 p.m. Central. This year's regional sites include East Carolina (Greeneville, N.C.), Indiana (Bloomington, Ind.) and Stanford (Palo Alto, Calif.).
