LAST TIME OUT: Penn Relays ... Junior Chantel Malone and the distance group led the Longhorns at the 2010 Penn Relays. Malone tied her personal-best in the long jump with a mark of 21-0.5, good for second place while the DMR posted the eighth-fastest time in Texas history. Senior Jordyn Brown placed fourth in the shot put (52-2.5) and sophomore Amanda Van Dyke set a PR in the event, finishing fourth in the college section with a mark of 49-1.5. The Horns' 4x400m also finished fifth in 3:34.02.
DISTANCE GROUP EXCELS AT PENN ... The Longhorn distance group returned from the annual Penn Relays with the eighth fastest DMR time in Texas history and the fastest 10K mark by a Longhorn since 2007. Allison Mendez finished the 10K in a PR of 35:18.38, a mark that is just two seconds off of the 1987 school record 33:30.73. The DMR of Betzy Jimenez, Judy Nwosu, Julie Amthor and Mia Behm posted an 11:22.72 for the third-fastest mark at UT since 2000.
MASTERSON CLIMBING FAST ... After tying the Texas indoor pole vault record of 13-6.25 (4.12m) during the indoor campaign, freshman Natasha Masterson has continued to etch her name in the UT record books this outdoor season. Most recently she cleared 13-9.25 (4.20m) to win the Michael Johnson Invite with the second highest height in UT history. She now has two of the top four outdoor marks by a Longhorn. Her mark currently ties for the 17th highest reached this year nationally and Masterson is one of just two freshman in the nation to clear at least 13-9.25.
MALONE CARRYING SUCCESS INTO OUTDOOR SEASON ... Junior Chantel Malone is using her most successful indoor season in the long jump since arriving on the Forty Acres in 2008 to propel her forward during the outdoor season. Recently, Malone tied her PR of 21-0.5 (6.41m) to place second at the Penn Relays (April 22). Malone posted an indoor PR of 21-4.25 (6.51m) to claim the Big 12 Indoor Long Jump Title. Her mark snapped a 13-year old Big 12 meet record and goes down as the second best mark in UT indoor history. Malone carried that success into the NCAA Indoor Championship where she placed seventh with a jump of 21-0 (6.41m) for the first individual All-American honor of her career. She also became just the second Horn in UT history to post two or more marks past 21 feet in a career.
COOPER BREAKING OUT ... Sophomore Angele Cooper is using the experience gained from a freshman season that included a trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championship semifinals in the 400m hurdles to build on this season's performances. She recently posted the third-fastest 400m hurdle time in the nation with her Texas Relays-winning mark of 56.52. Not only was her time two seconds faster than her previous PR, but it was also the fastest run by a Longhorn since Melaine Walker's 54.87 clocked at the 2006 Texas Relays. She has also PR'd in the 400m (53.52), good for 13th in the nation.
WHERE UT RANKS IN THE NATION ... Along with Cooper, a handful of Longhorns also rank in the nation's top 20 in their respective events. Junior Chantel Malone's long jump of 21-0.5 (6.43m) currently ranks seventh in the country while senior Jordyn Brown's shot put of 53-10.5 is tied for 11th. In the high jump, sophomore Victoria Lucas' 5-10.75 (1.80m) clearance is tied for the 15th highest this year. Malone and sophomore Stacey-Ann Smith boast the nation's 17th (53.51) and 20th (53.55) fastest 400m marks, respectively. Freshman Natasha Masterson is also tied for 17th in the pole vault (13-9.25, 4.20m)
