IRVINE, Calif. -- Texas junior Kathleen Hersey placed third overall in the 200-meter butterfly on day one of the 2010 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships.
After qualifying second during the morning preliminary round, Hersey placed third in 2 minutes, 7.27 seconds. Australia's Jessicah Schipper won the gold in 2:06.90, and Hersey's American teammate, Teresa Crippen, won the silver in 2:06.93. Hersey won the U.S. national title in the event earlier this month in Irvine.
The premier international meet of the 2010 calendar year, the Pan Pacific Championships feature some of the world's top swimming nations, such as the United States, Australia, Canada, South Africa, Japan and Brazil. Hersey, a 2008 Beijing Olympic finalist in the 200m butterfly, also represented the USA at the 2006 Pan Pacific Championships.
The Pan Pacific Championships continue Thursday in Irvine.
