AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas Soccer team recorded its first tie of the 2010 season after playing to a double overtime 1-1 draw with Southern California Sunday afternoon out at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Longhorns, whose lone goal came from junior Kylie Doniak, stay undefeated at 2-0-1 while USC is 1-1-1.
Texas came out on the attack in the first half recording its only goal in the 18th minute. Doniak, the 2009 leading scorer for Texas, connected on a perfect cross from Sophie Campise for her first goal of the season. Campise brought the ball up the right sideline before sending it into the middle of the box where Doniak was able to softly head it into the upper corner of the net for the goal. It marked the second straight game that Texas has scored in the first 20 minutes of the match.
The Longhorns had a chance later in the half to extend their lead when USC's Allie Harrison was given a red card and Texas had a penalty kick in the 41st minute. Senior Erica Campanelli took the kick but her attempt was saved by USC keeper Shelby Church.
With UT up 1-0 and USC down to 10 players, the Trojans came out on the attack in the second half, outshooting the Horns 11-2 during the second 45 minutes. The game evened up slightly in the 64th minute when Campise was given a red card, leaving UT with 10 players for the remainder of the match.
The Trojans tied the score with just three minutes remaining in the half when Carly Butcher sent in a corner kick that went wide to Megan Ohai. Ohai passed it into the center of the box where Ashli Sandoval recorded the goal.
With neither team able to connect in the last three minutes, the match headed into overtime. Both teams got a good look on goal in the first 10 minutes period with USC firing a shot that sailed just inches over the cross bar in the 93rd minute. Then, Texas' Stacey-Ann Smith got her best chance of the match with two minutes left when she brought the ball up and got around two USC defenders to set up a one-on-one with Church. Smith, the junior from Texas' track and field team, sent her shot to the lower corner of the net but Church was able to dive and make the save.
The second overtime played to the same tune as the first and with neither team able to find the back of the net, both recorded their first ties of the 2010 season. USC outshot the Longhorns 18-9 but Texas had a 7-4 advantage on shots on goal in the first meeting between the two programs.
The Longhorns stay in Austin next weekend as they host Navy at 7 p.m. on Sept. 3 and UC-Riverside at 7 p.m. on Sept. 5.

On the match: We played a good team and it was a good battle all the way through, but we are a little disappointed we didn't win, obviously with a goal that late you feel like we should be able to put it away, but overall it was not a bad result for us.
On competitive play: We were competitive for sure, I didn't think the game was overly physical but it was competitive and both teams were competing hard.
On difference between this years team compared to last years: I think we have a group of players that are hard working and are committed to being serious athletes and they are playing with passion and they are competitive.
On Kylie [Doniak] and her goal: Kylie is capable of scoring a lot of goals and we are trying to get her to shoot more and she did well to get her head on that ball.
On talented new faces: It is a lot easier when you have good players and a number of good players and I feel like we have talent in a lot of position right now and it shows when we play.
Junior Midfielder Kylie Doniak
