AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Texas Soccer team used five unanswered goals from five different players in the second half to post a 5-1 victory over Navy Friday night out at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Longhorns remain undefeated on the season at 3-0-1 while the Mids move to 2-2-1.
The Longhorns controlled the game from the first whistle, posting a 25-2 shot advantage over the course of the game, including an 8-1 lead in the first half. Despite Navy getting on the board in the 12th minute from a fluke corner kick that bent for the score, Texas kept up its offensive pressure and evened the score in the 59th minute. Sophomore Hannah Higgins netted the equalizer when she headed in a long cross from senior Erica Campanelli for her second goal of the season.
Just six minutes later in the 65th minute, the Longhorns recorded back-to-back goals within one minute of each other to jump out to a 3-1 lead. Junior Kylie Doniak struck first, firing a long shot in from the 18 yard line on the right side that bent in around Navy keeper Alexes Shaw-Lopez. Then just 60 seconds later, junior Amanda Lisberger headed in her first goal of the year off of a Kirsten Birkhold cross sent from the left goal line. It marked the first time since Aug. 31, 2008 that Texas has posted two goals in one minute.
Texas kept up its offensive attack and notched another goal in the 70th minute. Doniak sent a long ball over the Navy backline that junior Stacey-Ann Smith chased down setting up a one-on-one with Shaw-Lopez. Smith dribbled up to bring Shaw-Lopez off her line before firing a low shot to the lower left corner of the net. It was the first goal of the season for Smith, who is also a junior on the Texas Women's Track and Field team.
The Longhorns tallied their final goal of the match in the 85th minute when senior transfer Kate Incerto collected a rebounded corner kick to record her first career goal in Burnt Orange.
Texas' five goals are its most since 2007 (six vs. UTSA, Sept. 14) and it is just the fourth time since 2006 Texas has posted five or more goals in a match. Texas held Navy to just two shots, marking the second opponent in three games to be held at two or less. The Longhorns also recorded a season-high 17 shots on goal.
The Longhorns close the weekend with a home match against UC-Riverside on Sunday at 7 p.m. out at Myers Stadium.
