No. 6 Women's Swimming and Diving takes lead over No. 7 Arizona

AUSTIN, Texas - No. 6 Texas registered seven victories and opened a sizable lead on No. 7 Arizona Friday evening on day one of the teams' dual meet at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Texas leads Arizona by a 119-67 count heading into Saturday's 10-event session.
Texas opened the afternoon with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay, where sophomores Bethany Adams and Kelsey Amundsen and juniors Karlee Bispo and Katie Riefenstahl finished in 1 minute, 31.56 seconds. The Longhorns followed up with a two-three finish in the 400 individual medley, as junior Leah Gingrich paced Texas with a second-place time of 4:13.26. Sophomore Laura Sogar took third in 4:21.34.
Sophomore Maren Taylor led the Horns in the one-meter diving event, where she claimed the victory with 296.45 points. Sophomore Shelby Cullinan took third with 272.95 points. Bispo added another victory for Texas in the 100 freestyle, as she edged Arizona's Margo Geer with a time of 49.24. Geer took second in 49.52, and Amundsen placed third in 49.96. UT's Riefenstahl led the Horns in the 200 backstroke with a second-place time of 1:58.41. Freshman Melanie McClure took third place in 1:59.62, and sophomore Jessica Guro placed fourth in 2:00.34.
Cullinan added another win for the Horns, as she posted a total of 309.10 points in the three-meter diving event. Sophomore Samantha Holland took third with 294.05 points, and sophomore Diana Wilcox placed fourth with 291.05 points. Sogar led a one-two Texas finish in the 200 breaststroke, as she claimed the victory in 2:13.53. Bispo took second in 2:14.14. The Horns posted another one-two finish in the next event, the 100 butterfly, where Amundsen led the way in 54.38. Freshman Ellen Lobb followed in second at 54.95.
UT's Gingrich posted a season-best mark of 4:46.79 that was good for second place in the 500 freestyle. Riefenstahl added a fourth place time of 4:54.84. The Longhorns capped the meet's opening day with a win in the 400 medley relay in a NCAA "B" cut of 3:39.62. Freshman Lily Moldenhauer led off in 55.72 before Sogar split 1:00.39 on the breaststroke leg. Amundsen picked up the butterfly in 53.92 before Bispo anchored in 49.59.
The second and final session of the Texas-Arizona dual begins Saturday at noon at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
