FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Junior Angele Cooper clocked the second-fastest 400m time in the country while senior Chantel Malone posted second-best triple jump mark in the nation to highlight the Longhorns action on the final day of the Razorback Invitational, Saturday afternoon. Over the course of both meets, 12 Horns recorded personal-bests while winning three events.
Cooper crossed the line in a personal-best 52.69 to finish second in the 400m final and lead a group of four Horns that placed in the top 10 in the event. Cooper was followed by freshman Briana Nelson's fourth-place personal-best time of 53.31. Junior Kendra Chambers posted a PR of 53.72, taking just under three seconds off her mark from two weeks ago (56.01) for seventh while junior Stacey-Ann Smith posted a season-best time of 54.31 for eighth.
Malone, who recorded the second-best long jump in Texas history on Friday night, put her name in another Texas record book on Saturday posting a personal-best mark of 43-3 in the triple jump for the fifth-best jump ever at UT.
The Longhorns mile relay of Smith, Cooper, Nelson and freshman Danielle Dowie recorded a 3:34.12 for second place and is the second-fastest time in the NCAA this season. The time is also the fastest by a Texas 4x400m relay since 2008.
Texas had two runners come in under 9:30 in the 3,000m Invite section led by junior Mia Behm who clocked a personal-best 9:23.19 for second, followed by Betzy Jimenez in 9:29.08. Freshman Marielle Hall, running in her first 800m of the season, posted a 2:13.61, while freshman Sara Sutherland won the 3,000m College section in a PR of 9:42.27.
At the Houston Invitational, a pair of Longhorn throwers set personal-bests in the shot put. Junior Amanda Van Dyke threw for 50-7.50 (15.43m) while sophomore IJ Ubabuike recorded a 49-5 (15.06m).
POST MEET QUOTES
Head Coach Beverly Kearney
On the meets this weekend: You know I think that when you look at Texas now you see a complete team. You see great field event athletes, you see great distance runners. We had two people run under 9:30 in the 3,000m and we had another one run under 4:50 in the mile. Then we had two mile-relays that were the second and fourth-fastest in the country right now. We are just evolving as a team. We're on a mission and I think that is evident by everyone's performances. We're ready to keep improving and keep going.
