TEAM NOTES
- UT improved to 4-0 on the season. This marks the eighth time in the 14 years under Mack Brown that the Longhorns have opened the season with at least four consecutive wins.
- The Longhorns improved to 12-2 in Big 12 Conference openers under head coach Mack Brown. This is the second time UT opened league competition against Iowa State, the other a 37-14 win in Austin in 2006. Overall Texas is 12-3 in Big 12 openers.
- Brown is now 83-22 overall in Big 12 play, including a 38-7 mark on the road in conference games.
- This game marked the first time since 1998 that Texas has played consecutive road games within the first four games of the season. In 1998 the Longhorns played Kansas State and UCLA.
- Texas now leads the all-time series with Iowa State, 8-1, and is now 4-0 all-time in Ames.
- Under Mack Brown the Longhorns have recorded a record of 17-4 in regular season games following a bye week.
- For the third time in four games, the Texas defense held its opponent to three plays or less on the opening drive. Iowa State went three-and-out with a total of negative four yards. Also this season the Longhorns stopped Rice to three-and-out and negative nine yards on the opening drive and then intercepted a pass on the third play from scrimmage against UCLA.
- The Longhorns caused three first quarter turnovers with two fumble recoveries and one interception. Texas has caused 10 turnovers for the year with six coming during the first quarter in the last two contests. UT now has a +6 turnover margin in 2011 and has forced at least two turnovers in all four games.
- For the second straight game Texas held its opponent scoreless in the first quarter. The Longhorns have only allowed nine total first quarter points in the first four games this year with zero touchdowns allowed. UT has outscored its opponents 30-9 in the first 15 minutes of games.
- UT had 55 of its 70 players on the travel roster see action in the first quarter, including 21 on offense and 17 on defense.
- Texas did not allow a point in the first half, marking the first time since the Longhorns shut out Baylor in the first half in 2009 in Waco. That is a streak of 21 games since the Longhorns did not allow a point in the opening 30 minutes of play. The 34-point different for a first half was the most since that Baylor game when UT held a 40-0 lead at halftime.
- The three scoreless quarters for the Texas defense give them zero points allowed in seven of the 16 quarters this season.
- Iowa State's fourth quarter touchdown ended a streak of seven consecutive games where Texas did not allow a point in the fourth quarter.
- With Fozzy Whitaker's rushing touchdown, Texas running backs have combined for nine rushing touchdowns in four games this season.
- With David Ash's 48-yard touchdown pass, five different players have thrown a touchdown pass for the Longhorns this season.
- The blocked punt marked the 75th blocked kick for Texas in the Mack Brown era with 45 of those on punts. It was the first blocked punt returned for a touchdown since Malcolm Williams recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown at Missouri in 2009. UT has 77 non-offensive touchdowns since 1999, the second most in the nation.
- Turner became the third true freshman to score a touchdown for the Longhorns this season, joining Malcolm Brown and Jaxon Shipley. - Shipley is the third Texas player this season to catch a pass of 40 or more yards. He had two receptions of 40 or more in the game and became the second UT player this season with 100 or more receiving yards (Mike Davis - 115 vs. Rice).
- The Longhorns sacked Steele Jantz three times in the game. Iowa State had only allowed four sacks in its first three games. The three sacks for Texas were one more than its total of two in the first three contests combined.
- UT finished with nine tackles for loss which is four more than its average of five per game entering the contest. In the first three games, Iowa State had only given up 16 tackles for loss total.

- UT is now 97-13 when scoring first.
- UT is now 129-16 when scoring more than 20 points.
- UT is now 113-8 when leading at halftime.
- UT is now 122-6 when leading after three quarters.
- UT is now 101-12 vs. unranked opponents.
- UT is now 67-23 in games away from home (road and neutral sites).
- UT is now 51-10 in true road games. The Longhorns have won 46 of their last 51 true road games.
- UT is now 43-6 in true road games against unranked opponents.
- UT is now 85-6 when forcing more turnovers than its opponent.
- UT is now 115-4 when outrushing an opponent.
- UT is now 101-20 when outpassing an opponent.
- UT is now 103-23 when passing for more than 200 yards.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
Emmanuel Acho
- Acho picked up his second sack of the year and seventh career sack during the third quarter. The two sacks lead the team through four games.
- He had two tackles for loss in the game to give him a team-leading six TFL on the year. He also leads the squad with 41 tackles after his eight-tackle performance.
David Ash
- Ash threw his first career touchdown pass on a 48-yard completion to Mike Davis in the second quarter. The pass nearly doubled his previous long for a completion of 26 yards.
- Ash was the first true freshman quarterback at Texas to throw a touchdown pass since Garrett Gilbert in the 2009 BCS National Championship game against Alabama.
- In the second quarter, Ash found Jaxon Shipley on a 40-yard touchdown pass. The play was a direct snap to Whitaker who handed off to Shipley who then pitched it back to Ash and wheel route before catching the 40-yard scoring thrown.
- In the first half, Ash completed 4-of-8 pass attempts for 113 yards and two touchdowns. In the first three games this season he had thrown for 68 yards on the season on 6-of-7 passing. He went on to finish the game 7-of-12 for 145 yards and two touchdowns.
Malcolm Brown
- On the first offensive play of the game for Texas, Brown rushed for a season-long 22 yards. His previous long was 20 yards against Rice in the opener.
- Brown led the team with 63 rushing yards on 15 attempts.
Mike Davis
- Davis caught a 48-yard pass from Ash for his first receiving touchdown of the year and third of his career. He has four catches of 45 or more yards this season. Four of the six Texas plays of 45 or more yards have come on Davis' receptions.
Quandre Diggs
- Diggs, a true freshman, notched his second forced fumble of the season on a first quarter kickoff. His two caused fumbles lead the team.
Steve Edmond
- Edmond posted six tackles in the game after notching just four career tackles prior to the outing. All six of his tackles were solo stops.
Blake Gideon
- Gideon intercepted a Steele Jantz pass in the opening period for his first interception of the season and ninth of his career. Gideon returned the interception 43 yards to give him 96 career interception return yards.
- Gideon also recorded one sack for a loss of five yards. It was his second career sack. His other sack came last season at Kansas State.
- He tied for the team lead with eight tackles. Seven of his eight stops were solo tackles.
Tevin Jackson
- Jackson recovered the caused fumble by Diggs on the first quarter kickoff for his first career fumble recovery.
Alex Okafor
- Okafor recovered a fumble in the first quarter giving him his first career fumble recovery. It was the third fumble recovery for the Longhorns this season.
Jaxon Shipley
- Shipley hauled in a 40-yard touchdown catch on a reverse pass in the second quarter. It was his second touchdown grab of the season.
- Shipley finished with six catches for 141 yards and one touchdown in the game. It is the 13th 100-yard receiving game by a freshman in school history. The 141 yards are the seventh most in a single game by a freshman and fifth most by a true freshman at Texas. It is the most since Malcolm Williams caught four passes for 182 yards at Texas Tech in 2008. His six catches are tied for seventh most in a single game by a Texas freshman and tied for sixth most by a true freshman.
- Two of Shipley's four catches were of 40 or more yards and he had three of 20 or more yards. He had a season-long 49-yard reception in the third quarter to go along with his 40-yard score.
Mykkele Thompson
- Thompson blocked the second quarter punt that was returned 34 yards for a touchdown. It was the first blocked kick of the season for the Longhorns and 75th during Mack Brown'stenure at Texas.
Josh Turner
- Turner returned UT's blocked punt 34 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. It was the first blocked punt return for a touchdown since 2009 at Missouri and the first touchdown of Turner's career. He is the third true freshman to score a touchdown for Texas this season.
Justin Tucker
- Tucker made field goal attempts of 29, 33 and 35 yards in the game. It is the third time in his career he has made three or more field goals in a game. On the season Tucker is now 5-of-6 on field goal attempts after making 3-of-4 in the game. He is now 28-of-33 (.848) for his career.
Kenny Vaccaro
- Vaccaro posted his first career sack in the second quarter and first tackle for loss this season.
Fozzy Whittaker
- Whittaker scored on a 16-yard touchdown run in the first quarter for his fourth rushing touchdown of the season and 10th of his career. The touchdown came on a direct snap to Whittaker, the third time he has scored on nine direct snaps taken in 2011.
