Women's Swimming & Diving tops Texas A&M in dual

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas Women's Swimming & Diving claimed a 197-103 dual meet victory over Texas A&M Friday at the Lee & Joe Jamail Swimming Center.
"I did not think that we would be that dominant across the meet, not because I thought Texas A&M would be better than us but because I did not know we would be that good," said head coach Kim Brackin. "These girls showed what they wanted and they went after it. That is what I am really impressed about. Top to bottom I can't think of anyone that had a poor swim."
With the win the Longhorns extend their lead in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown to 3.5-1. The victory also helped UT remain undefeated on the year.
"I love that our first home meet was against Texas A&M," said Brackin. "There were great fans in the stands that understood the importance of the meet."
The Longhorns had 11 wins on the day, including nine individual victories and two relay wins.
A pair of seniors, Leah Gingrich and Karlee Bispo, led Texas on the day with three individual wins each. Gingrich took first in the 1000 freestyle (9:42.38), 500 freestyle (4:45.42) and the 200 butterfly (1:57.75). Bispo posted first place times in the 200 freestyle(1:46.77), 100 freestyle (50.09), and the 200 IM (2:01.47). Bispo was also on the first place 200-yard medley relay team with Lily Moldenhauer, Laura Sogar and Ellen Lobb.
"It has been a really great atmosphere at practice so it does not surprise me the performances that we had tonight," said Gingrich. "I thought it was going to be a closer meet but it was really exciting that everyone was doing really well and posting fast times in the beginning of the year."
Also grabbing first place finishes for Texas individually were Moldenhauer in the 100 backstroke(54.06) and the 100 butterfly (54.47), junior Bethany Adams in the 50 freestyle (23.05) and senior Katie Riefenstahl in the 200 backstroke(1:58.08).
Texas won both of the relay events on the night, taking first in the 200 medley relay(1:39.97) and the 400 freestyle (3:22.55).
In the diving events, the Longhorns had a top diving performance of second in the 3-meter by Diana Wilcox with 319.73 points and third in the 1-meter with 293.40 points by Samantha Holland.
Next Texas will host the Texas Invitational in Austin beginning on December 1.
