AUSTIN, Texas - No. 24 Texas (6-4, 1-0 Big 12) swept the doubles session and claimed five of six singles matches in a 6-1 win over No. 27 Texas A&M (6-3, 0-1 Big 12) Saturday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The win marks the Longhorns' ninth consecutive victory over the Aggies.
With the victory, The University of Texas earns one point in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown, the annual all-sports competition between the two schools. Texas holds a 7.0-5.0 lead over Texas A&M with seven points still up for grabs this season.
Texas came out aggressively in the doubles session and put away the Aggies in all three matches. At first doubles, UT's Amanda Craddock and Cierra Gaytan-Leach broke the serve of Texas A&M's Janelle Cuthbertson and Christi Liles to assume a 2-1 lead, and the Horns never looked back. Texas broke once more for a 5-2 lead before finishing off the Aggies, 8-4.
At the second slot, Texas' Krista Damico and Aeriel Ellis broke the Aggies' Morgan Frank and Nazari Urbina at 3-all and cruised to an 8-4 win to clinch the doubles point. UT's Juliana Gajic and Maggie Mello trailed the Aggies' Stephanie Davidson and Christi Potgieter by a 4-2 margin at third doubles before taking the next four games to assume a 6-4 lead. The Horns went on to finish off the win at No. 3 by an 8-5 count.
Texas quickly took a 2-0 lead, as Damico needed less than an hour to finish off the Aggies' Frank at second singles by a 6-3, 6-1 count. Texas' Craddock staked the Horns to a 3-0 lead at fourth singles when she dealt Texas A&M's Potgieter a 6-3, 6-0 defeat. UT's Mello clinched the victory for the Longhorns at third singles after posting a 6-1, 6-4 win over A&M's Liles.
Texas senior Caroline Larsson added on to the Longhorns' lead at sixth singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over the Aggies' Davidson. Texas A&M's Urbina outlasted UT's Ellis in a third-set match tiebreak at first singles, and UT's Gajic closed out the match with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over the Aggies' Cuthbertson at fifth singles.
Texas resumes conference play on Friday, March 18 when it hosts Missouri.
