AUSTIN, Texas - Senior All-America middle blocker Rachael Adams connected for 16 kills on .565 hitting to lead the No. 4 Texas Volleyball team past Ole Miss, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at the Burnt Orange Classic. The 25-22, 25-22, 24-26, 25-14 victory improved the Longhorns to 2-0 on the season and dropped the Rebels to 0-1. Texas returns to action Saturday at 5 p.m. Central when it takes on the Israel National Team.
Adams committed just three errors on 23 swings against Ole Miss and added seven blocks and a career-best three service aces. Freshman outside hitter Haley Eckerman joined her in double figures with 11 kills and chipped in three block assists, while sophomore middle blocker Haley Cameron posted eight kills on 18 error-free swings and hit .444.
After trailing early in the first, Texas used a 5-1 run to forge ahead 11-10 after a pair of kills by Cameron. The Horns stretched the margin to 23-19 late in the frame on kill by Adams and closed out the set, 25-22 on Cameron's fourth kill of the stanza.
In the second, the Longhorns took control early and ballooned their lead to 19-14 behind five kills and a block by Adams. A kill by Eckerman extended the lead to 24-19 before a late Ole Miss rally was disrupted by a service error that sealed the Horns' 25-22 set victory.
Despite four kills and three blocks by Adams in the fourth, the Longhorns dropped the set after a 5-1 Rebels run closed the set. Kara Morgan heated up down the stretch for Ole Miss to erase Texas' set point at 24-22. They ran off four straight points and clinched the frame 25-22 on an ace by Morgan Springer.
Texas stormed out of the gate in the fourth, using a strong service run by Adams to claim a 9-4 edge and a second service rally by Allison that put UT in front 18-9. Texas went on to extend the margin to 11 and wrapped up the set 25-14 on a kill by Cameron.
