Football engages with cancer awareness

When the Longhorns take the field at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. Central against the Baylor Bears, it will be about more than a football game. As a part of the Horns for Hope initiative, Texas Football has selected this home game to build cancer awareness and show their support for all who have been affected by the disease.
The Longhorns begin activities Friday when the children from the Dell Children's Hospital visit campus and meet the team at the football complex. On gameday, a number of young Longhorns fans battling the disease will be at the game to receive game balls in a special pregame ceremony. During the game the players will wear pink wristbands and the ribbon of their choice to promote awareness of any form of cancer that has affected their lives -- pink for breast cancer, yellow for testicular cancer, or purple for all other forms of cancer which affects those around us.
The coaching staff will join by wearing black and pink shoes, and pink towels will be used on the team's bench.
LiveStrong has signed on to be involved as a sponsor for this special Horns for Hope initiative.
On Saturday, greet the team as part of the Stadium Stampede when the Longhorns arrive on the corner of 23rd St. and Robert Dedman Dr. beginning at 4:45 p.m. Then be in your seats early to be a part of the special events and help the Longhorns raise cancer awareness in the Central Texas community. And remember -- come early, be loud, stay late, and wear orange!
