Women's Swimming and Diving sits in fourth place through day one of SMU Classic

DALLAS, Texas - Texas holds fourth place through day one of the SMU Classic, a unique six-team event that limits each team to eight swimmers and one diver. The Longhorns are competing in their initial meet under the direction of first-year head coach Carol Capitani (cap-it-TAN-ee) and assistant coach Roric Fink.
USC leads the meet with 185 points, and North Carolina sits in second with 149.5 points. Florida holds third with 145 points, and Texas sits in fourth with 129 points.
Louisville is in fifth place with 116 points, and host SMU is in sixth place with 111.5 points.
Texas opened the night by taking fourth in the 400-yard medley relay. Junior Sarah Denninghoff, an All-America transfer from the University of Arizona, led off the relay in a meet-best 26.80. Denninghoff teamed with All-Americans Laura Sogar, Ellen Lobb and Kelsey Amundsen to take fourth in 3 minutes, 42.36 seconds.
Sophomore Kaitlin Pawlowicz followed by taking fifth in the 400 IM in 4:17.92. Sogar competed in the event's "B" final and took fifth in 4:21.46. Junior Alex Hooper placed sixth in the 200 freestyle in 1:53.79. Sophomore Skylar Smith added a fifth- place showing in the 200 freestyle in 1:52.12.
Amundsen added a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 23.24. Sophomore Gretchen Jaques won the "B" final in 23.21.
Senior All-American Diana Wilcox placed sixth in the one-meter diving event with 228.90 points before Amundsen took sixth in the 100 butterfly in 55.39. Lobb claimed third place in the "B" final in 55.20. Denninghoff notched a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 55.73, while Hooper took fourth in the "B" final in 57.21.
Sogar completed her busy night by taking second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.12. Sogar is UT's school-record holder in both breaststroke events. Jaques took second in the "B" final with a nearly identical time of 1:02.21.
Texas capped the evening by taking fourth in the 800 freestyle relay, as Pawlowicz, Denninghoff, Hooper and Smith finished in 7:24.47.
Day two of the SMU Classic gets underway Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Central.
