FORT WORTH, Texas - The University of Texas men's tennis team had seven singles players advance to the round of 32 and four doubles teams advance to the round of 16 during the opening day of the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships on Saturday at the Friedman Tennis Center.
"We had a great day to open this tournament," head coach Michael Center said. "We played really hard and it showed on the court as the majority of our players advanced to the next round. Tomorrow will be a big test for us."
In the singles draw, unseeded junior Jacoby Lewis led a group of seven Longhorns advancing with an upset of No. 7 seed Vitor Manzini (Texas Tech). Joining Lewis in the round of 32 are No. 3 Daniel Whitehead, No. 5 David Holiner, No. 6 Sudanwa Sitaram, No. 21 Ben Chen, No. 23 Lloyd Glasspool, No. 25 Nick Naumann.
Four doubles teams from UT advanced to the round of 16, including top-seeded Chris Camillone and David Holiner after defeating a team from Rice, 8-1. Also advancing were No. 2 Ben Chen/Daniel Whitehead, Alex Hilliard/Nick Naumann, and Jacoby Lewis/Sudanwa Sitaram.
Competition in Fort Worth resumes tomorrow morning with the doubles draw, followed by the singles draw in the afternoon.
The Texas Region is one of 12 ITA regions that will send players to the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Championships.
The winners of the singles and doubles draw advance to the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Championships, which are Nov. 8-10 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Admission to all matches at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional are free.
