LUBBOCK, Texas - David Ash threw for 264 yards and three touchdowns, and Johnathan Gray rushed for 106 yards on 20 carries as No. 22 Texas held on for a 31-22 victory over No. 20/20 Texas Tech Saturday afternoon.
The Longhorns (7-2, 4-2 Big 12) remained perfect on the road this season (4-0) behind a big-play offense and a defense that held the Red Raiders (6-3, 3-3), who entered the game with the 11th-ranked offense in the nation, to four field-goal attempts in six trips into the red zone.
Mike Davis had a career-high 165 receiving yards and a career-best two TD catches from Ash who was 11-for-19 and led the Horns on five scoring drives.
After Texas Tech closed the gap to 24-22 on a Seth Doege-to-Eric Stephens 10-yard touchdown pass with 1:35 left in the third quarter, the Horns answered with an eight-play, 59-yard scoring drive.
Ash's 25-yard TD pass to Davis gave Texas a 31-22 lead with 9:14 left in the game.
The Red Raiders marched 69 yards in 13 plays on the ensuing possession before the Longhorns defense forced a field-goal attempt, the fourth inside the UT 20. But Carrington Byndom blocked the 23-yard attempt from Ryan Busin, who was 3-for-3 to that point in the game.
Texas, which has won three straight games and four in a row vs. Texas Tech, took over at its own 20 and ran out the clock.
Playing before the largest crowd in Jones AT&T Stadium history, the Longhorns started the game liked they hoped, forcing a Texas Tech three-and-out on the game's opening drive and marching for a touchdown.
Gray did most of the damage on the drive, rushing for 26 yards on the first play and taking a pass from Ash 34 yards into Texas Tech territory. Five plays later, Ash found a wide-open Jason Shipley from 6 yards out to stake Texas to a 7-0 lead with 9:02 remaining in the first quarter. The Red Raiders evened the score at 7-all on the ensuing possession when Kenny Williams plunged into the end zone from 1 yard out.
Texas needed less than three minutes on the game clock to regain the lead. A 54-yard connection from Ash to Davis set up first-and-goal at the 2. Running back Joe Bergeron found paydirt on the next play to give the Horns a 14-7 lead.
Texas Tech cut the deficit to 14-10 on a 29-yard field goal from Ryan Bustin, but the Longhorns immediately responded and stretched their lead to 21-10. Texas took the ensuing kickoff to its 25-yard line, and on the next play, Ash found a streaking Davis down the middle of the field for a 75-yard touchdown. It marked the longest career play for both players.
The two teams exchanged field goals to end the half. Bustin connected from 41 yards with 5:03 left to cut the Texas lead to 21-13. Anthony Fera pushed the lead to 24-13 with a 42-yard field goal with 1:09 left in the half.
Bustin added a 33-yard field goal with 6:39 left in the third quarter to trim the Texas lead to 24-16.
The Red Raiders had a chance to tie the game at 24-all, but Byndom broke up a Doege pass on two-point conversion following Stephens' 10-yard TD reception.
Doege completed 26 of 44 passes for 329 yards and one touchdown. Eric Ward (8-126) and Darrin Moore (7-108) each had more than 100 receiving yards, but the Longhorns defense did not allow many big plays. The Red Raiders' longest play from scrimmage was 25 yards.
Gray had his second-straight 100-yard rushing game (career-high 111 vs. Kansas) and had a career-high 147 all-purpose yards in the same stadium his father, James, was an All-American running back in the late 1980s.
