HOUSTON - No. 14 Texas (6-2) collected singles wins from sophomores David Holiner and Sudanwa Sitaram and freshman Lloyd Glasspool, but No. 11 Texas A&M (5-1) emerged with a 4-3 victory over the Longhorns Friday evening in the Texas Cup, a non-conference match played indoors at The Downtown Club at The Met. The match does not factor into the State Farm Lone Star Showdown competition between the two schools.
Texas A&M claimed the doubles point with victories at the first and second slots, though Texas picked up a victory at third doubles from Sitaram and junior Daniel Whitehead, who dealt the Aggies' Jordan Szabo and Alexis Klegou an 8-6 defeat.
Texas evened the tally at one at fourth singles, as Glasspool improved to 5-1 in dual-match play with a 7-6, 6-1 win over the Aggies' 73rd-ranked Jeremy Efferding. A&M's Hoover reclaimed the lead for the Aggies with a 6-2, 6-4 win over UT's 112th-ranked Whitehead at second singles. Texas A&M pushed its lead to 3-1 on the strength of a 6-3, 7-6 win from John Lewis over UT junior Chris Camillone. But, the Horns would not go away, as Holiner topped A&M's Jackson Withrow by a 6-4, 7-5 count at sixth singles to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Texas' Sitaram kept the Horns in the match at third singles, where he outlasted the Aggies' 104th-ranked Junior Ore, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 to tie the match at three. The deciding point came down to the No. 1 singles slot, where the 19th-ranked Klegou edged UT freshman Soren Hess-Olesenin a tight three-setter, 7-6, 1-6, 6-4.
Texas concludes its weekend road swing on Sunday when it meets Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the Islanders' home courts. First serve is set for 2 p.m. Central.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
"This was an unbelievable match. This team is amazing. Our team fights so hard. We had opportunities in the doubles to win that point, and we didn't get it. We lost a couple of first-set tie breakers (at Nos. 1 and 3 singles), but our guys kept fighting to turn the match around. It came down to 5-4 in the third set at No. 1, and that's how we finished a four-plus hour match. Texas A&M hit some good shots and made some plays in the end. This was just a great college tennis match. This team was fantastic tonight."
