CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - No. 14 Texas (6-2) won the doubles point and claimed five of six singles matches on its way to a 6-1 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (4-4) Sunday at the Corpus Christi Athletic Club. The match was scheduled to be the first men's tennis contest held at the Islanders' Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center, but the match was forced indoors to the Corpus Christi Athletic Club due to inclement weather.
"It was a good match today, and it was a fun match," UT head coach Michael Center said. "Unfortunately, the weather didn't allow us to play outdoors and open up the new facility, but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi did a great job to make it a fun day. A lot of our guys got to play, and we had a successful day."
Texas opened the match by sweeping the doubles session and claiming the doubles point. UT's 48th-ranked tandem of Chris Camillone and David Holiner led off with an 8-1 win at second doubles over the Islanders' Aurelien Tave and Matt Westmoreland. Texas clinched the doubles point at the third slot, where Jacoby Lewis and Joey Swaysland posted an 8-4 win over Andrew Maingot and Alex Pavlov. The Longhorns completed the sweep at first doubles, where Soren Hess-Olesen and Alex Hilliard outlasted Peter Nagy and Gergo Weidinger, 8-6.
Lewis pushed the Texas lead to 2-0 after registering a 6-0, 6-0 win over Maingot at sixth singles. Swaysland picked up his first collegiate win and pushed the lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over A&M-Corpus Christi's Nathan Robinson at fifth singles. Holiner clinched the Longhorns' victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Weidinger at third singles.
Hilliard, a Corpus Christi native, staked Texas to a 5-0 lead with a 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-2 win over Fernando Llorens at fourth singles. UT's Sudanwa Sitaram, making his first appearance at No. 1 singles, put Texas up 6-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nagy. The Islanders took the match's final point when Tave topped UT's Camillone at second singles, 7-5, 6-4.
Texas resumes play on Friday, Feb. 17 when it begins competition at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. The Horns will take on third-ranked Ohio State at 8 a.m. Central at The University of Virginia's Boar's Head Sports Club.
