The Longhorns began a pair of weekend home matches with a 4-0 sweep of the Volunteers on Friday.
Austin – No. 3 Texas Men's Tennis swept No. 51 Tennessee, 4-0, on Friday at the Texas Tennis Center. The match was the Longhorns' third-straight win and was the first of two weekend home matches.
Texas took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 3 and 1 and was also a game away from a win at No. 2 when play stopped. The Longhorns then followed with singles victories by freshman Lucas Marionneau at No. 6, sophomore Oliver Ojakaar at No. 3 and senior No. 4 Sebastian Gorzny at No. 1. Freshman No. 90 Abel Forger was also close to breaking for a chance to serve out his match at No. 4 when play halted.
Forger was not in the doubles lineup with usual partner freshman Kalin Ivanovski, so Ivanovski paired with sophomore Evan Burnett at No. 3, and they were first off the court with a 6-3 win over Woodson McMillin and Piotr Siekanowicz. The No. 23 duo of Gorzny and Marionneau then clinched the point with a 6-2 win over Jose Garcia and Ethan Muza at No. 1. The No. 19 pair of Ojakaar and sophomore Sebastian Eriksson were then leading Shion Itsusaki and Alejandro Moreno, 5-3, at No. 2 when play stopped.
Marionneau was then first off the singles court with an efficient 6-1, 6-2 win over Siekanowicz at No. 6 for a 2-0 lead. Then a short time later, Ojakaar and Gorzny finished within moments of each other with Ojakaar downing Jan Kobierski, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3, and Gorzny closing the door with a ranked win over No. 106 Garcia, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 for the clinch.
That left three matches unfinished, including Forger, who had swept his first set against Boruch Skierkier and led, 6-0, 5-5 (0-40 against Skierkier's serve) when play halted. Meanwhile No. 43 Eriksson and senior Jonah Braswell had both won their first sets to give Texas a sweep of those on all six courts, as Eriksson led No. 114 Moreno, 7-6 (5), 0-3, at No. 2, and Braswell was up, 6-4, 2-2, against Itsusaki at No. 5.
The Longhorns (17-6, 8-2 SEC) will host Arkansas on Sunday, March 29, at 1 p.m. CT at the Texas Tennis Center.
