Women's Golf finishes first day at Darius Rucker Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Three Longhorns carded opening-round scores of 5-over-par 76 to lead the Texas Women's Golf squad on the first day at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. Juniors Madison Pressel and Haley Stephens along with freshman Bertine Strauss finished the round tied for 31st place while UT is currently tied for 11th place on the team leaderboard (305, +21).
Pressel made her only birdie on the first hole of the par-71, 6,160-yard Long Cove Club. She bogeyed four and nine to make the turn at 1-over before a double bogey on 11 pushed her to +3. Pressel bogeyed two of her final three holes - the 16th and 18th - to result in the 5-over round.
South Carolina-native Stephens played 15 holes at even par, but bogeys on holes one and three and a triple on seven also put her at +5 on Friday afternoon.
Like Pressel, Strauss made her only birdie on the first hole before adding bogeys on seven, 10, 12 and 17 and a double bogey on 13.
Seniors Nicole Vandermade and Megan Rosenfeld round out the Texas contingent at 6-over 77 and tied for 45th place.
Alabama opened the tournament at 4-over 288 for a four-stroke lead over second-place North Carolina (292). Georgia, UCF and Virginia are tied for third place at 13-over 297.
Saturday's second round has been changed to a shotgun start due to a threat of severe weather in the greater Hilton Head area tomorrow afternoon. Texas will tee off alongside host South Carolina and Tennessee at 8 a.m. Central on the 10th-13th holes.
