LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The Texas Women's Golf team fought inclement weather that included two lightning delays at Lawrence Country Club on Friday morning in the opening round of the Big 12 Championship. The defending conference champions are currently in eighth place at 45-over-par 325 as they play without reigning individual champion Madison Pressel who is out for the remainder of the season due to a right-shoulder injury.
Freshman Bertine Strauss stepped up for the Longhorns with a first-round score of 7-over 77 and is tied for eighth place. She carded UT's only red number on the par-4 10th hole where she found a rare birdie opportunity. Strauss trails the leading trio by just two strokes.
Average scorecards on Friday were 81.40, more than 11 strokes over par.
Senior Nicole Vandermade carded an 11-over 81 and is in 25th place with two rounds remaining in her final conference championship. Juniors Desire Dubreuil (83), Haley Stephens (84) and Katelyn Sepmoree (88) are tied for 30th, 36th and 46th places, respectively.
Iowa State (311, +31) holds a two-stroke advantage over current runner-up Baylor (313, +33) through 18 holes. Oklahoma State (315, +35) and Oklahoma (316, +36) round out the top-four teams.
Texas returns to action Saturday morning at 8:40 a.m. Central alongside seventh-place Kansas State. The second round will be played in twosomes off of the first tee in eight-minute increments.
