AUSTIN, Texas - After leading Texas to the 2012 Big 12 Outdoor Championship, head women's track & field coach Beverly Kearney was chosen as the Big 12 Outdoor Coach of the Year on Wednesday.
For Kearney it is her seventh coach of the year honor. She earned the award in each of the first three seasons of the Big 12 (1997-99), won it in 2003 and 2004 and claimed her most recent one in 2006. She has received the honor more than any other coach in Big 12 history.
Kearney molded the Longhorns into a championship team over the last two months. The team's hard work paid dividends, resulting in the school's seventh Big 12 title. UT scored 139 points on the weekend to capture the trophy ahead of second place Kansas and third place Texas A&M.
UT picked up three individual event champions on the way to the conference title. Natasha Masterson became the first Longhorn to ever win the pole vault at the Big 12 Championships. Shanay Brisce won the high jump for the second straight season and Danielle Dowie earned her first Big 12 title in the 400m hurdles.
Kearney and the Longhorns will try to carry the momentum from the conference championship throughout the remainder of the postseason. Next up is the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in Austin May 24-26. The NCAA Championships will be June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
