NEW ORLEANS -- University of Texas men's cross country will begin the season ranked sixth in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national preseason poll that was released on Tuesday.
It is the highest USTFCCCA preseason ranking in program history for the Longhorns and head coach John Hayes.
"It is great to be ranked in August, but at the end of the day the National Championships is in November and you have to stay healthy over the next three months to be successful," Hayes said. "Quite honestly, our goal is to finish higher than what that ranking is - if we finish there it certainly wouldn't be a bad thing but we are looking to do a little better than that."
The Longhorns are one of three top-six teams that compete in the Big 12, behind No. 2 Oklahoma State and No. 4 Oklahoma. Texas will play host to the Big 12 Cross Country Championships on Oct. 27 at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.
"We wont be satisfied until we win the Big 12," Hayes said. "It is a brutal conference competitively, but it makes it more fun in October when we compete in the conference championships. It is going to be a dog-fight race with the best in the country on our home course."
In the South Central Regional preseason poll, Texas is No. 1 for the fourth consecutive time after winning an NCAA Regional title and finishing 11th nationally last season.
Texas begins the 2012 campaign on Saturday morning with a head-to-head meet against UTSA at Austin's Auditorium Shores beginning at 7:30 a.m. Central.
