Carter finishes sixth in shot put; Richards-Ross and Peter advance in 200m

LONDON -- Former Longhorn Michelle Carter qualified for her first Olympic final and recorded a sixth-place finish in the shot put on Monday night at Olympic Stadium.
After posting a runner-up finish at the U.S. Olympic Trials in June, Carter, who placed 15th in the shot put at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, threw a mark of 19.42m (63-8.75) on her fourth of six attempts for her best distance of the day. In the morning session, the three-time USA Outdoor champion was the only American to advance to the final, qualifying in fourth place with a throw of 18.63m (61-1.50).
"I felt good today," said Carter. "Sixth place wasn't bad for my second Olympics. My season isn't over. I'll continue to work hard. Success comes with growing and learning. I'm not mad, I'm a little disappointed but it will come when it comes. I'm still young in my sport."
The Longhorns also had a trio of competitors in the first-round heats of the 200m, including Olympic 400m champion Sanya Richards-Ross. Running in the fourth heat, Richards-Ross posted a time of 22.48 to win the heat and qualify with the top overall time for Tuesday's event semifinal heats.
Rising juniors Allison Peter (U.S. Virgin Islands) and Christy Udoh (Nigeria) raced together in the first heat of the day, finishing in fourth and fifth, respectively. Peter, who was competing in her second individual event after running in the opening heats of the 100m dash, posted a time of 23.00 that was good enough for 19th place overall and a semifinal berth. Udoh's 23.19 narrowly kept her out of the 200m semifinals as she finished 25th.
Rounding out the day for the Longhorns was Jamaica's Melaine Walker in the 400m hurdles. Walker, the Olympic record-holder in the event, was looking to advance to the final to earn the right to defend her title from Beijing in 2008. Competing in the third semifinal heat, Walker posted a time of 55.74 and placed fourth. However, her time landed her in 12th overall, short of the top-eight finish she needed to earn a spot in the final.
Richards-Ross and Allison Peter will be the lone representatives for Texas on Tuesday in the 200m semifinals at 2:25 p.m. Central. Peter will run in the first heat while Richard-Ross will compete in the third alongside 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica.
