Texas defeats UTSA in season-opener

AUSTIN, Texas -- The sixth-ranked Texas men's cross country team began the 2012 season by defeating UTSA on Saturday morning in a 4-mile race at Auditorium Shores.
With the top returning runners from last season on the bench, a trio freshmen paced the Longhorns in the first three spots. Daniel Vertiz finished first overall, followed by Brady Turnbull (2nd) and Nate Moore (3rd).
Sophomore CJ Jessett (11th), freshman David Anamosa (12th), freshman Shaun Van der Walt (13th) and sophomore Kyle Thompson rounded out Texas' harriers on Saturday.
As a team, UT scored 29 points to edge the Roadrunners' total of 30. Mike Medrano paced UTSA with a fourth-place finish.
Texas returns to competition on Sept. 28 for the Grass Routes Festival in Austin.
