FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Seniors Keiron Stewart and Hayden Baillio each had first and second-place finishes for the third-ranked Texas men's track and field team, but it was edged by top-ranked Arkansas, 85-78, Friday evening in a dual meet.
Stewart won the 60-meter hurdles in 7.74 and was second in the 60 meters (6.80) to earn eight points in the 16-event meet. The four-time All-American also ran the second leg of the 4x400-meter relay that was second in 3:13.83.
Stewart's time in the 60mh ranks No. 10 on the UT all-time performance list.
The score went back and forth through much of the season-opening meet for both teams and Texas led 65-64 with four events left, but the Razorbacks were able to hold on by taking first and second in the pole vault and triple jump.
Senior Jarard Bruner was third in the triple jump in (48-01.75/14.67m), but he was the lone Longhorn in the event.
Texas also only had one entry in the 200 and 400 and surrendered three points in those three events.
The top four individuals in each event earned points on a 5-3-2-1 scale. Only two competitors' finishes and one relay team score were included in the team totals. The first-place relay team earned five points and the second tallied three.
"The guys showed a lot of potential tonight," head coach Bubba Thornton said. "I feel good about where we're at and we'll get better in the next competition."
Texas won three of the four individual middle distance/distance events. Craig Lutz won the 3,000 meters (8:15.20), Joe Stilin captured the mile (4:06.29) and Kyle Thompson picked up a win in the 800 (1:52.71).
"Stilin is going to be really good for us," Thornton said of the senior transfer from Princeton. "He showed a lot of poise."
Stilin also ran the opening leg of the winning distance medley relay (10:23.20). Senior Patrick McGregor ran the final leg of the DMR and was second in the 1,000 meters in 2:25.09. He set the school record in that event (2:22.75) two years ago at Randal Tyson Track Center.
Sprinter Zack Bilderback stood out in his first collegiate meet. He ran the final leg of the 4x400 and was third in the 400 meters (48.16).
"Bilderback was extremely good," Thornton said of the freshman.
Baillio, a three-time first team All-American, won the shot put with a toss of 60-10.75 (18.56m) and was second in the weight throw (56-06.50/7.23m). Newcomer Clint Harris won the weight throw with a mark of 58-03 (17.75m).
Junior Casey Wicker and freshman Reese Watson finished third and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault with identical marks of 16-00.75 (4.90m).
Andrew Irwin of Arkansas won the event with a clearance of 17-00.75 (5.20m).
With many new faces on the roster, Thornton saw this as a meet as a chance to build team chemistry.
"We got a chance to get over the nerves tonight and that was good for us," Thornton said.
The Longhorns return to Fayetteville in two weeks for the Razorback Team Invitational (Jan. 25-26).
